On Tuesday evening, Montgrove and Wollemi parents were delighted to have Dr Karen Bohlin from Boston, MA present at our Term 3 Key Parent Function, hosted at Montgrove College. The KPF was titled, “Parenting Without Losing Your Mind: A Compass to Navigate with Joy and Purpose”.

Dr Bohlin presented the Practical Wisdom Framework, a tool she built for parents to have fruitful conversations with their children. She reinforced how to be loving, hopeful and a parent that instils confidence rather than fear in children, especially as they navigate distraction, technology and the pressures of growing up.

Dr Karen Bohlin is a Research Affiliate at the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University. She was the Head of Montrose School for 18 years, a school like Montgrove and Wollemi in Boston. Thank you, Dr Bohlin, for sharing your expertise with us, and thankyou to the Pared Academy for organising her visit!

Before that, it was a pleasure for our staff to visit our sister school, Tangara School for Girls, last week for an all-staff professional development workshop delivered by international speaker Dr Karen Bohlin on ‘The Schooling of Desire: Lessons from Art, Film and Philosophy”. Together we delved into some important questions:
  • How can we learn to respond instead of reacting impulsively?
  • How do we guide students in navigating the multitude of distractions and making wise choices?
  • How do we awaken their desire to pursue authentic flourishing?
The aim of the workshop was to draw from ancient and contemporary research and empower the staff to use that for nurturing wisdom to help make informed choices in the classroom, through the mentoring system, and with one another. With a commitment to learning and development for the staff, the Montgrove and Tangara teachers are feeling energised to embark on Term 3 with the students and parents!
